A deep plane facelift lifts and repositions the deeper layer of facial tissue, rather than simply tightening the skin as older skin-only lifts do. Because the lift comes from underneath, it restores the jowls, jawline and midface in a way that looks natural and unpulled, and it tends to last considerably longer. It is Hagen's preferred technique for the most reliable, long-lasting result.
A face lift focuses on the lower face, lifting the jowls and restoring the jawline, while a neck lift tightens loose skin, banding and fullness beneath the chin. The two are usually performed together as a combined face and neck lift, because the jaw and neck age as one unit. At your consultation Hagen will advise whether you need the full lift or a more limited lower face or neck procedure.
Because a deep plane lift repositions the deeper structures rather than just the skin, more significant and natural looking changes are expected with an average rejuvenation of approximately 10 years, depending on tissue quality. You will continue to age naturally, but most patients always look younger and fresher than they would have without surgery.
Hagen does not routinely use drains and all sutures are dissolvable, which makes for a much gentler recovery. Most visible bruising and swelling settle within two to three weeks, and many patients feel ready to return to social life and work after around two to three weeks. Deeper swelling refines quietly over the following months as the final result settles.
Face and neck lift incisions are carefully placed in the natural creases around and behind the ear and within the hairline, so they are well hidden and typically fade to become very discreet. You will receive personalised scar-care guidance, and most patients are comfortable wearing their hair up within a few months.
Suitability is about your health and the degree of laxity rather than your age alone. Many patients are in their 50s and 60s, but the right candidate can be younger or older. Where only the lower face and jowls need attention, a more limited or mini face lift may be appropriate. Hagen will recommend the least surgery that will achieve a natural, lasting result.
Performed by an experienced consultant plastic surgeon, a face and neck lift is considered safe. As with all surgery there are risks such as bleeding, infection or reaction to anaesthesia, but serious complications are rare. Because Hagen selects patients carefully, his complication rates are very low; despite operating close to the facial nerves, he is not aware of any case of permanent complete nerve damage. Every risk is discussed openly so you can make a fully informed decision.
